Victor Wembanyama has garnered hype before entering the NBA the likes of which we have never seen before. Wembanyama is considered the unanimous first-overall pick in this year’s NBA Draft and is expected to go to the San Antonio Spurs. JJ Redick explained why we should expect him to be sensational coming into the league.
On an episode of his podcast, JJ Redick spoke about Victor Wembanyama and what makes him so special. He noted that, much like Luka Doncic, Wemby dominated the EuroLeague at a very young, and unlike other European prospects, Doncic and Wembanyama became stars in the league, which made their transition to the NBA so much easier.
“A lot of times, European players that get drafted in the 10-20, early second-round range, they don’t actually play a lot. They don’t have a lot of production. A lot of times, you’re gauging the upside, you’re gauging the potential of what you’ve seen in 11 minutes of action in a EuroLeague game”.
“The difference with Wenbanyama, it harkens back to Luka. Played in an A-League, one of the top 5 professional leagues in the world. He dominated, he produced and he did it at 19 years old. Luka started playing for Real Madrid at 16, and by 17 he was a full-time starter, dominated the following year, EuroLeague MVP”.
"The difference with [Victor] Wembanyama, it harkens back to Luka [Doncic]… That’s not normal for kids that young to completely dominate the way that Luka did and the way that Wembanyama did."

“That’s not normal for kids that young to completely dominate the way that Luka did and the way that Wenbanyama did. Which is one of the reasons I’m so high on, beyond the physical tools and the skillset, the guy has been in big games and he’s produced.”
Redick is clearly very high on Wembanyama’s potential, and Luka makes for an apt comparison. Doncic dominated the EuroLeague with Real Madrid before making the jump to the NBA. And since his arrival, he has been one of the best players in the league each year.
Will Wembanyama Live Up To The Hype?
Victor Wembanyama will, barring any changes, be drafted to the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs have a solid track record when it comes to building around talented big men, with Tim Duncan and David Robinson coming to mind. The Spurs will be thrilled to have their next franchise player.
Wembanyama will go to a franchise that has had some incredible European players. Another French superstar became a legend in San Antonio; Tony Parker. Parker was a multiple-time All-Star and even won a Final MVP trophy in 2007.
NBA fans are eager to get their look at Victor Wembanyama. And they will get their chance to do so at the 2023 NBA Summer League, as Wembanyama confirmed that he would take part in the tournament ahead of his debut with the San Antonio Spurs.
