Joe Mazzulla is having a wonderful season as a rookie head coach on the Boston Celtics. His success will be dependent on what happens in the playoffs, but he’s been a good hire so far.

During the Celtics’ win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, Mazzulla let emotions get the better of him and stormed onto the court mid-play to protest a call.

The refereeing from this game has been heavily criticized, with a controversial late-game jump ball violation from Grant Williams also going unpunished. Referees need to be more adept at making calls in these situations, as Wolves fans feel rightfully hard done in a game they lost by just 2 points.

Are The Boston Celtics Still Title Favorites?

The Celtics have spent most of the season atop the East until recently being dethroned by the Milwaukee Bucks. The Philadelphia 76ers are also trying to make a push for the second seed, something the Celtics have to be wary of. They have definitely fallen in the eyes of many as title favorites after a bunch of mixed results since the All-Star Weekend.

The best player of a contending team can ultimately be the difference-maker. Jayson Tatum has been struggling over the last 10 games, shooting 42.2% from the field and under 30% from 3, while averaging 27.4 points. That’s lower than his season average of 30.1 points.

Joel Embiid and Giannis Antetokounmpo have elevated their level of play, while Tatum has seemingly regressed, worrying analysts about the Celtics’ title hopes. The strength of the roster is still unmatched and the Celtics just need to find the versions of themselves that dominated the first half of the season to earn their spot as favorites back.
