Joel Embiid has finally earned the award he’s spent years chasing, as he was named the 2023 NBA MVP after a sensational season. He received the honor while appearing on Inside the NBA.
Ernie Johnson asked Embiid if he would be playing in Game 2 after missing Game 1 with a knee injury. The newly-crowned MVP didn’t want to confirm his status just yet.
“We shall see. Like I said, we got families to celebrate with and then we’re going back to focus on Game 2.”

The 76ers are currently up 1-0 over the Celtics after James Harden put on a masterclass to win Game 1 on the road. Embiid probably will rest for Game 2 as well and return to the series when it moves back to Philadelphia for Game 3. At worst, the 76ers return home with the series tied and with home-court advantage or, at best, have two games at home after winning the first two games in Boston’s TD Garden.
A Legacy-Defining Series For Joel Embiid
Joel Embiid may have finally won the MVP award, something he’s been manifesting for himself since 2014, but he has a lot of postseason achievements to earn still. The primary one would be his first-ever Conference Finals appearance, as Embiid has never made it past the second round in his 9-year NBA career thus far.
In addition, the Boston Celtics have eliminated Embiid’s 76ers from the playoffs multiple times in recent years. This is a historic team rivalry with a lot at stake personally for the Sixers players.
Hopefully, they can lock in and continue playing well without Embiid in Game 2 if he isn’t available. Winning that and then coming back home with a 2-0 lead and Embiid on the court may be the perfect situation for Philly.
