JR Smith always stars in interesting stories, and one of the most controversial of his career happened in 2018 when he was still a part of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The guard was suspended for throwing soup on then-Cavaliers assistant coach Damon Jones. Talking with JJ Redick, Smith explained that Jones got on his nerves during a tough time for Smith on the court (around the 1:10:00 mark).

“So, Damon Jones, he’s my guy. … But he has a knack of playing too much,” Smith said on Old Man and the Three. “And, for me, don’t get me wrong, I like to play a little joke here and there, but he’s consistent with it. For me, if I’m telling you ‘I’m not in the mood right now.’ I had some stuff going on at home, I wasn’t playing well. I’m like, ‘Not right now.’

“Sure enough, I’m in the lunch room getting my soup, he comes in—mind you, the soup was hot, I’m like the first person in there—he’s trying to make me spill it. I’m not gonna lie, it took me a second. I actually thought about it. It wasn’t a rageful throw. It was like, ‘OK you’re playing with me, I know you’re playing with me, I’m gonna show you.’ I literally thought about it, and I threw it on him. He’s over there screaming because the s–t is hot. I’m like, ‘See, you’re gonna stop playing now with me now, right?'”

This is wild from Smith, who wasn’t having any of the stuff Jones was trying to play with. In the end, the Cavs suspended him for one game for this incident, but in the end, Jones apologized for pushing the player until he couldn’t take it anymore.

Smith has plenty of crazy stories, including the infamous Game 1 of the 2018 NBA Finals. That year was really entertaining for Smith, who endured several bad situations.

Now, he’s getting a docuseries where we’ll have the chance to know more about his personality and antics in the NBA, and we’re pretty sure more of these stories will be shown there.

JR Smith Talks About How LeBron James Changed His Mentality

He has grown over the years and even credited LeBron James for changing his mind. After joining the Cavaliers, Smith changed his habits, putting in the work to be impactful for his team and achieve big things.

Smith knows that playing alongside James has never been easy, but he was willing to do whatever it took to help the 4x NBA champion. He’s won two titles alongside the King, so his hard work must have paid off.
