Michael Jordan changed the face of basketball by being arguably the greatest to play the game. He also changed the fashion industry with his sneakers, making the Jordan Brand a billion-dollar company.

Kevin Durant thinks MJ’s shoes are going to outlast his legacy as a player, even saying more people know him today for his shoes than his basketball career.

“You can walk around any environment, anywhere on Earth, at least somebody’s going to have a pair of Jordans on. That’s gonna live on forever even when we are all gone from here. He probably is that now (known for sneakers more than basketball). The brand is synonymous with class and luxury, it’s top-of-the-line. He has such iconic models in his collection that we’ll never get again. When they took the swoosh off for Jordan, that’s what made the allure of it grow even more. We know for a fact that the greatest player in the league wore and won championships with. The stories behind his shoe, they’re gonna always hit deeper than everybody else.”

KD may actually be right. While everyone may know that Jordan was an NBA player, they wouldn’t necessarily know the details of his career unless they were NBA fans or watched The Last Dance. Everyone knows what Jordan means when it comes to shoes, allowing MJ’s influence to spread way beyond the sports world and into fashion.

The Importance Of Signature Shoes

Lots of NBA players have shoe contracts but very few players actually get their own signature shoe. Jayson Tatum received his first signature shoe this season, 5 years into his career. He’s a Jordan Brand athlete and the company’s history shows how selective they are when it comes to giving signature shoe deals to their stars, with under 10 players since the inception of the brand receiving their own shoe.

Kyrie Irving is looking for a signature shoe deal in China because Nike dropped him in favor of Ja Morant. Stephen Curry and LeBron James are signing lifetime contracts with their brands to ensure their future outside of being on the court, highlighting how much athletes at the highest level value these things.

MJ established the basketball sneaker game and now every basketball player hopes to eventually get their cut.
