Kobe Bryant was one of the greatest players to have ever lived and arguably one of the most beloved NBA players to step onto the court.

His passing in January 2020 left a hole in the basketball community that’ll never be filled. His social media accounts are still open for nostalgic fans, but recently his Twitter lost its verified checkmark. It has since been reinstated, with the mark saying that the account is a Twitter Blue subscriber.

Twitter CEO Elon Musk has forcefully given checkmarks to various accounts to try and protect their identity, including LeBron James

Verifying Kobe Bryant‘s identity and account is crucial, but it’s weird to put a label saying he subscribed to Twitter Blue and verified his phone number when we all know it wasn’t possible for him to do any of that.

Verification For Athletes Is Important

What’s happening at Twitter seems like a clearly divisive issue amongst its users. Most athletes and celebrities don’t see the value in paying for the free service and have actively tried to remove the subscription that Musk has forced onto their accounts to keep them verified. Dismantling the previous system has really taken a toll on verifying the identities of players. Only 7 NBA players had checkmarks on Twitter after the legacy ticks were removed, meaning most of the league was left without verification of their identity,

Even when the old verification system was in place, troll accounts were able to spread misinformation easily by making impersonator accounts. That increased dramatically when the checks were removed, which has forced Twitter to hand out checks to notable people again.

It seems we have regressed back to what the original system was, where notable people continue getting verified for free to protect their identity, while more blue-collar workers pay for a subscription to a free app to have the same check as celebrities.
