Larry Bird On Why The 1960 Team USA Was A Lot Tougher Than The 1992 Dream Team: “Walking 3,000 Miles To The Colosseum In Rome”

  • Larry Bird spoke candidly about the 1992 Dream Team during their Hall Of Fame enshrinement
  • Larry Bird said he couldn’t call it the greatest team ever assembled
  • He compared them to the 1960 Team USA, explaining why the older team was tougher

The 1992 Team USA roster, known as the Dream Team, is considered the greatest basketball team ever assembled. Larry Bird, who was on it, though, hilariously disagreed with that during their Hall Of Fame enshrinement, talking about the toughness of Team USA in 1960.

“It’s a special honor to play with these young men,” Bird said, gesturing to the Dream Team. “After 1992, which was my last game competitive I ever played in. Pretty good way to go out, with a gold medal and playing with…

“Man, I can’t say the best team ever assembled but one of the best teams ever assembled. A cast of characters, the different personalities, then Charles Barkley. But we had a lot of fun.

“You know, this group of guys right here, I don’t know, there’s a lot of debate going around who had the best team? The ones in the 60s or the one in ’92? I don’t know who had the team, but I know the team in 1960 was a hell of a lot tougher than we were.

“Because I couldn’t imagine the ’92 team, getting into covered wagons for eight days, going across the country, jumping in the Atlantic ocean, swimming for six days, then walking 6,000 miles to the Colosseum in Rome for a dollar a day.“

Larry Bird is joking about older players in the NBA, talking about how much more comfort the players in the 1980s and 1990s had. They didn’t go through all that, but it was Larry Legend’s way to clap back at the narrative.

The 1960 Team USA Destroyed Their Opponents At The Rome Olympics With Ease

Jokes aside, Team USA in the 1960s may not have had as much star power as 1992, but they were a menace at the Olympics. The team was led by stars like Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Jerry Lucas, all of whom are certified NBA legends.

The team took their competition at the 1960 Olympics apart with ease, going 8-0 against the field to claim the gold medal. They scored 101.9 points per game and gave up just 59.5, meaning they won with a whopping average margin of 52.4 points.

The Dream Team has been immortalized in NBA lore as the greatest ever assembled. With names like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird prominent, that is hard to dispute. But there have been some insane Team USA rosters before and since, too.
