LaVar Ball hasn’t had many nice things to say about Michael Jordan in the past. He saw Jordan draft his son to the Hornets in 2021 but objected to the fact that Jordan’s coaching staff on the Hornets let them bench LaMelo Ball for 20 games without Jordan objecting to the decision.

“What advice is he going to give my son? You ain’t no point guard. If he had any advice to give, he’d give it before the Draft. If he really had some advice to give, why don’t you give it to the coaching so he doesn’t have to sit for the first 20 games. Whoever drafts somebody No. 3 and then you don’t start him? How does that work? You should give them some advice. ‘Hey, I think you should play this guy.’ 20 games and somebody’s got to get hurt and then you say, ‘Oh, we’re going to start him now.’ You should’ve started him when he got a triple-double off the bench.”
LaMelo played in 51 games as a rookie, starting in 31 of those contests. Despite the early-season benchings, he emerged to win Rookie of the Year ahead of No. 1 overall pick Anthony Edwards. Ball has since even made it to an All-Star team, but barely played last season due to injuries. LaVar also opened up on how he reacted to LaMelo winning the ROTY.
“I don’t feel no different because that’s what he does. If Lonzo didn’t get hurt, he’d be Rookie of the Year. That’s how my boys are. He came off winning Rookie of the Year in Australia playing 11-12 games, getting triple-doubles, of course, he’s going to be Rookie of the Year.”
LaMelo averaged 15.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists as a rookie.
He has had a rough start to the 23/24 season, averaging 17.5 points through the first two games but on 25.0% efficiency from the field. He has been dropping dimes, averaging 9.5 assists as the Hornets won one game and lost the other.
LaVar Ball Wants His Sons To Team Up On The Clippers
LaVar has previously dissed every team either of his sons have played for, so it’s always interesting to see which team tickles his fancy for a Ball Brother reunion. His latest target is the Clippers, openly praising Steve Ballmer and fantasizing about his sons playing in the new Intuit Center.
“I want them all to play for the Clippers. I don’t want to go back to the Lakers for how they did Lonzo, so let’s go to the other team. Let’s go to Steve Ballmer, that’s my guy. I like him. I tell him, my name is Ball, his name is Ballmer, who gonna push the ball more? He got a whole new stadium coming. Clippers, trade Melo over there. Everyone saying Lonzo is not good, let him leave Chicago and sign with the Clippers..”
With a new arena move coming, having a star attraction like LaMelo would be good for the franchise. However, there just isn’t a likely scenario where the Clippers have enough assets to trade for a 21-year-old who is a former All-Star and just signed a max rookie extension. Lonzo’s future is more up in the air, but it’ll be interesting to see what he can get on the market in 2025 if he can play the 2024/25 season.
