Throughout his career and even after, Michael Jordan has had a reputation for being ruthless and emotionless. However, that’s quite unfair considering that he has shown emotion time and time again. His reaction to Kobe Bryant’s passing and his monologue in The Last Dance when he talked about how hard he was on his teammates are two examples that jump to mind.

Another example of Jordan showing his caring side was when he reached out to one of his biggest fans, Jeffrey Harrison. Harrison went viral thanks to his love for the NBA legend and his commitment to the game of basketball despite his struggles with autism. A video of him playing the game in Michael Jordan’s Bulls gear caught Michael’s attention.

In 2016, Jordan surprised Jeffrey by sending him several gifts as well as sending him an emotional letter and actually making a phone call and talking to him.

An excerpt from the letter he sent to Harrison shows how encouraging Jordan was in supporting Jeffrey’s commitment to improving his game.

“Continue to believe in yourself, play hard and always remember to enjoy the game. Your friend, Michael Jordan.”

MJ had more to say to his fan than he said over a phone call he made. Initially, he spoke to Harrison’s mother and explained that he was calling to thank her son for his dedicated support. He then spoke directly to Harrison, asking if the goodies he had sent were enough and telling him that he would be watching for him.

“Did you get all the stuff? Is it enough? Okay, enjoy yourself and imma be watching okay? Love you, man.”

NBA athletes can often find themselves insulated from their fans thanks to the massive celebrity they enjoy and to see the greatest ever taking the time to make a fan’s day is wonderful and inspiring. Jordan may have been a fierce competitor on the court, but no one can say that he doesn’t appreciate his fans whenever he gets the chance.
