NBA Executive Says Not Many Teams Would Give Draymond Green A Max Contract: “He’s Really Got To Fit Your Other Personnel And The Warriors Fit Him Really Well, On Both Sides.”

Draymond Green is perhaps one of the most important pieces to the puzzle that is the Golden State Warriors. While the likes of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson step up for the team offensively, it is Green who fills up the gaps in other areas, namely defense and playmaking.

A versatile defender, the 6’6″ forward can defend multiple positions on the court. Not only that, he acts as a playmaker for the Warriors. Carrying the ball up the court, Green is able to find great passes for his team and set up his teammates. Given his contributions to the Dubs, recent reports emerged that Green was expecting a max contract from the team.

Recently, an NBA executive spoke about how he felt about Green expecting a max contract and why many NBA teams might not be willing to offer the same.

“With Draymond, there are not a lot of teams out there that would give him the max. You can’t. He’s really got to fit your other personnel and the Warriors fit him really well, on both sides. But what he does, he should be able to do that for them for most of another contract.”

The executive went on to explain why the Warriors offering a max contract might be worth it, though.

“He will be 33 next summer, you can get two or three years out of him — it’s not like what he does is all about athleticism. As long as he can move on defense, keep playing at that level, keep picking you apart with his passing, he’ll play up to what they’re paying him.”

Steve Kerr and the coaching staff have built a great system for the Warriors, and Draymond is certainly a big part of the same. Given that he is the spearheading force in the defense and is perhaps their primary playmaker, the Dubs might end up offering the 2017 DPOY a max contract.

With other teams, though, Green’s role might be very different as he would have to play more off the ball and have to take up a more dominant role as a defender. With age certainly not on his side, switching into a more physically demanding role might be tougher. Do you think the Warriors will keep hold of Draymond Green?
