Victor Wembanyama officially became a member of the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday after they selected him with the first pick of the 2023 NBA Draft.

Hailed as a generational prospect, the hype surrounding Wembanyama is something that hasn’t been seen since LeBron James was entering the league back in 2003. Even as great as LeBron was though, he wasn’t an All-Star in his rookie season and NBA fans debated whether Wembanyama could become one in 2024.

One fan believes there is no chance the Frenchman will be an All-Star next season.

A fan boldly claims Wembanyama would make one of the All-NBA teams as well.

Luka Doncic didn’t get into the team back in 2019 and so, a fan believes Wembanyama won’t either.

One fan wouldn’t be surprised if the fan vote nets Wembanyama a spot on the team.

Had Wembanyama been drafted to a team in the Eastern Conference, then he’d have made it as per one fan.

Wembanyama certainly will get a whole lot of fan votes thanks to the hype and his countrymen, but it still only accounts for 50% of the total. The remaining 50% is with the media and the players themselves, so if he doesn’t play at a very high level, it’s not very likely that he’ll become a starter. To be an All-Star reserve, the coaches will have to vote him in and they’ll only do that if his play really merits it.

Who Were The Last Rookies To Make The All-Star Team?

The last rookie to make the All-Star team was Blake Griffin back in 2011. Griffin was actually drafted in 2009 but missed his entire first season due to an injury. He finally made his debut in 2010 and averaged 22.5 PPG, 12.1 RPG, 3.8 APG, 0.8 SPG, and 0.5 BPG on the season. He wasn’t a starter, but the coaches voted him in and you can’t really say it was undeserved based on those numbers.

The last rookie to start the All-Star game was Yao Ming in 2003 and that was solely because of the fan vote from China. Back then, the starters were selected purely from fan votes and it was only in 2017 that this new system was put in place.

Interestingly, the only other players the Spurs drafted first overall, Tim Duncan and David Robinson, did make it in as rookies, so there would be some expectations that Wembanyama would follow in their footsteps.
