- Patrick Beverley explains why he told Vanderbilt not to sign extension with Lakers
- Beverley says NBA free agency is where all the money is made
- Vanderbilt is set to make over double his salary from last season
Success is never guaranteed in the NBA, and neither is good health. So for most players, when they are presented with an opportunity to extend their contract and secure their place in the league for years to come, they are happy to sign the deal. This summer, Jarred Vanderbilt had a chance to continue his run with the Lakers and he did end up signing a four-year, $48 million extension that kicks in next season.
But despite making just $4 million this past season, former Laker guard Patrick Beverley admitted that he actually advised Vando (for some reason) not to sign that extension. He explained why on his podcast:
“I text him at 8:18 a.m. – ‘Don’t sign an extension trust me. Hoop stay in shape, have fun, I REPEAT, do not sign an extension.’ I told him the reason why is because you sign an extension and you get your worth and as a free agent, you get overpaid. A lot of you young guys don’t know. Overpay, free agent, you get your worth, extension.”

Many fans would already call Vanderbilt’s current deal an overpay, but it’s possible he could have gotten even more if he tested free agency. This summer alone, we see several teams spend big for mid-level role-players like Dillon Brooks and Fred VanVleet. Depending on who you ask, Vanderbilt falls within that category, but it was an easy choice for the Lakers, who benefited greatly from Vanderbilt’s size and defense on the floor. Obviously, he didn’t take Beverley’s advice, and it helped guarantee that he not only got a huge pay raise but that he can play for a team that will be competitive each and every season.
Lakers Fans Troll Beverley For His Failed Attempt To Sway Vanderbilt From LA
According to Beverley, the real money is made in free agency and while he’s not wrong, turning down a contract extension is always a big risk, especially for a young player like Vanderbilt, who still has so much to prove. Needless to say, many fans weren’t happy with Bev for almost luring Vanderbilt away from the Purple and Gold and trying to convince him to take an unnecessary risk.
nah watchin this back is unreal
vando who is currently making 4 million dollars this season is offered 3 times his salary for the next four years
and u got bev telling him to turn it down in hopes of everything going right and some team over paying him

Not sure I’d take advice from someone who gets signed on the Vet min by a different team every year but that’s just me

As an 11-year NBA veteran, Beverley certainly knows a thing or two about succeeding in the NBA, and he’s not entirely wrong about financial opportunities in free agency. Most times, players can make much more money on the open market than they can through an extension but money isn’t the only factor to consider when deciding an NBA contract.
Vanderbilt Made The Right Choice By Extending With The Lakers
Rob Pelinka and the front office made it a top priority to re-sign Vando this summer, and he’s now among the highest-paid role-players on the team. Through 26 games with the Purple and Gold last season, Jarred put up 7.9 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game on 54% shooting.
Alongside LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and young sharpshooter D’Angelo Russell, the Lakers are primed for another excellent season and Vanderbilt is expected to play a large role from day one. Putting the money aside, he’s found a team that suits his talents and that’s not always an easy thing in the NBA. It’s a good thing he listened to his gut and chose financial security over taking the advice of Patrick Beverley.
