The Los Angeles Lakers are slowly but surely putting their abysmal 2021-22 NBA season behind them. They are preparing to improve their chances of at least fulfilling the expectations of the fans to have a great playoff run.
In the 2021-22 NBA season, the Lakers played so underwhelmingly that they missed the NBA Play-in tournament along with the postseason. Next season they need to do better and in hopes of doing that, they have made a crucial change in the team's coaching department.
After firing head coach Frank Vogel, many wondered who would fill in his shoes for the Purple & Gold. Well, the Lakers announced that they are hiring Darvin Ham as their new head coach, along with Rasheed Wallace as their assistant head coach.
To be honest, not many are convinced of this decision, and it seemed like Russell Westbrook was one of them. After the announcement was made official, Brodie had a cold reaction to it.
One might wonder if that would have had a negative impact on Ham's relationship with Westbrook. Well, Ham answered that question in an introductory press conference by calling Russ one of the best players that our leave has ever seen.
On top of that, Ham also shared Russ' personal mission for the upcoming season in an interview.
(Starts at 0:31)
"I want him to feel loved, I want him to feel comfortable. ... You gonna bring him off the bench you gonna do this, no none of that stuff matters... I need him to set the tone defensively... He said he's willing to do that. He's made it his own personal mission to be better defensively."
It's great to see that Ham is getting along with his players even before the season has started.
But the honeymoon period will soon end and once the season begins, fans will expect results from the team. Will Russ be able to put that poor season behind him? Well, there is no way for us to find that out as of now.
