The Golden State Warriors did an amazing job of building a phenomenal roster that helped them win the 2022 NBA Championship. With the celebrations over, the Dubs are now working towards preparing for the upcoming season.

Since they are the defending champions of the league, they need to make sure to create a roster that would help in winning back-to-back NBA Championships. But it is easier said than done.

Due to the fact that the Warriors have so many great players on the roster, they are now being forced to pick between players. Otherwise, it would only result in their owner Joe Lacob stepping out of his budget and ending up spending millions of dollars in luxury tax.

In order to avoid that, the Warriors decided to part ways with Gary Payton II and Otto Porter Jr.

But how much money did that save the Warriors? Well, it is reported to have helped the organization save over $60 million in salary and luxury tax combined.

For anyone curious in terms of the difference in cost.

Combined 22/23 salary of Gary Payton II + Otto Porter Jr: $14.3M

Combined 22/23 salary of Donte DiVincenzo + JaMychal Green: $6.3M

Plus a luxury tax difference of: $52.6M

Keeping the rotation of the roster in mind, adding Donte DiVincenzo and JaMychal Green has already been labeled a great decision by the franchise.

But when you take a look at its financial side, it becomes an even better decision. There are still many tougher decisions heading toward Joe Lacob’s way. He has to pick between Andrew Wiggins and Jordan Poole to hand out a max or a near-max contract.

Most believe that it should be Wiggins. One NBA cap specialist even pointed out the fact that unless Poole has another great season, he doesn’t deserve a huge contract. Who will Lacob choose? We will find out next offseason.
