In the NBA, like other professional leagues, it’s common for athletes to follow a strict and very specific routine during off days and throughout the offseason.
These guys are the best in the world at what they do, and only through practice and repetition can they continue to play at the highest level.
Although JJ Redick is no longer an active NBA player, he was one who was willing to put the work in, and it is what kept him in the league for 15 years.
Speaking in a recent appearance on the ‘Knuckleheads’ podcast, Redick revealed his off-season training routine and the constant work he was putting in to hone his skillset as one of the best shooters in basketball.
“My offseasons were harder than the seasons, bro. And that’s a big reason I retired because I couldn’t do another f**king offseason. Like my offseasons were six days a week, two or three workouts a day. Saturdays off, Sundays make 342 shots exactly every Sunday every offseason for the last 13 years.”
Redick’s offseasons were so intense they were apparently part of the reason he retired. Besides countless hours in the gym and rigorous training sessions, Redick also implemented cold tubs and a strict tight diet into his regular-day activities.
“I knew exactly what I was gonna eat for breakfast. I knew exactly when I was gonna get to the gym I knew exactly how many minutes I was going to get in the hot tub before I got on the training table. Then I got my pre-shootaround shooting, then my post-shootaround shooting, then my cold tub. Knew exactly what I was gonna eat for lunch, then I knew when I was going to take a nap. I had my naps timed out bro…”
Today!! Take a look inside the mind of 1 Duke’s All-Time Greats, a 15yr pro, 1 of the greatest shooters to ever shoot the ball and now a top notch analyst/broadcaster at ESPN and he also has his own show @OldManAndThree. Redick was not the most talented or the most athletic NBA basketball player, but he found success thanks to the hard work he was willing to put in. Unfortunately, not every player goes to such lengths to maximize their career.
Work Ethic Is The Key To Success In The NBA
Every player brings something to the table, some just have to work harder than others to carve out minutes in the league. For Redick, all that hard work paid off with a 15-year career he can look back and be proud of.
Redick never was able to capture a title during his playing days, but those who have won the chip will tell you that it takes a lot of work and a very specific mentality.
All-in-all, it seems like we often forget just how hard it is to win in the NBA and what some of these players have to do every day to just stay competitive.
