Deandre Ayton and Monty Williams haven’t had the best relationship, and things have gotten pretty tense in recent times, as the player and the head coach have starred in controversial moments that have affected the rest of the team.

Last season, they clashed during the infamous Game 7 of the second-round series against the Dallas Mavericks. More recently, they had a spat on the Phoenix Suns bench, making things worse for them.

The communication between them was really complicated, and it doesn’t seem like Williams and Ayton are making amends anytime soon. Things haven’t gone well for the Suns, and they have become a big disappointment this season.

Monty Williams Throws Shade At Deandre Ayton Over Game-Changing Play

Following another defeat against their nemesis, the Dallas Mavericks, Monty Williams once again charged against his player, throwing shade at Ayton, who missed a big rebound against Dwight Powell, which ultimately gave the win to the Mavericks.

Williams wasn’t happy with that and called Ayton out for not fighting hard enough to get the ball from Powell.

"In that situation, it was not as important to us as it was to them to get the ball. Period."

“In that situation, it was not as important to us as it was to them to get the ball. Period,” Williams said per Duane Rankin of The Arizona Republic.

The Suns are now 25-25, ranking 7th in the Western Conference standings, and not looking like a solid candidate to win it all. At the start of the season, they were playing at a high level, but injuries started coming, and the Suns slowly decreased their level.

They were the best team in the West in 2021 and posted the best record in the league in 2022, but these Suns are a shell of those who delighted the NBA with their good displays. If the situation doesn’t improve, perhaps the team will move on from some figures, and both Ayton and Williams could be on the move soon.
