For the NBA’s 23rd-ranked offense, shooting should be the priority ahead of this season’s NBA trade deadline. Even with Giannis Antetokounmpo leading the show, the Bucks have had a lot of trouble putting the ball in the hole, and Khris Middleton’s absence has only made it worse.
So, it should be no surprise that the Bucks are rumored to be on the search for some offensive firepower, and the latest report out of Houston indicates they already tried (and failed) to land some reinforcements.
Remember in February 2019 when Milwaukee sent four second-round picks to New Orleans as part of a three-team trade to acquire Nikola Mirotic? The Bucks are said to be trying the same approach in their trade pursuit of Houston’s Eric Gordon, pitching four second-rounders to the Rockets in various scenarios. League sources say Houston continues to seek a first-round pick in any Gordon deal.
This season, 34-year-old Eric Gordon is averaging 12.2 points, 2.6 assists, and 1.9 rebounds per game on 42% shooting. He’s an aging veteran past his prime, but he seems to still have something left in the tank as a shooter and scorer off the bench.
In Houston, those skills are being wasted on a roster that’s clearly not built to win now, anyway. In Milwaukee, though, Gordon could really thrive as a perimeter threat beside Giannis.
The problem is Houston’s price tag for Gordon is currently a first-round pick, not a bunch of seconds like the Bucks tried to offer.
Will Eric Gordon Be Moved Before The Deadline?
Only time will tell how all this trade season plays out for teams across the league, and Gordon is certainly not the only name to watch for the Bucks. But after seven seasons in Houston, it seems like only a matter of time before the Rockets let go of the former Sixth Man of the Year.
“There’s no improvement,” Gordon said on the Rockets, via RealGM. “Same old thing all year. We have a small margin for error. It’s a lot of things. It’s mindset. You got to play for one another. Do what’s right by your teammates. If you do that, it’d be more fun. You give yourself a better chance to win.”
According to Gordon, the Rockets are not a fun team to play for right now. And with so much youth, inexperience, and uncertainty on the roster, it’s anyone’s guess when Houston might actually turn things around.
For now, they are locked in on the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes, which is all the more reason to trade Gordon for whatever they can get.
