Patrick Beverley has been one of the best perimeter defenders in the league throughout his career, often bothering opposing ball handlers. He has developed as a solid 3 and D player and is a valuable complementary player.

Even though he is a solid veteran in the league right now, currently playing for the Los Angeles Lakers, there was a time when Patrick Beverley played overseas in Russia. Eventually, he ended up getting picked up by the Houston Rockets, and he hasn’t looked back since.

On a recent episode of “Cold As Balls” on LOL Network, Patrick Beverley revealed that he had to pay $1.4 Million of his own money to get out of his contract with his Russian team, adding that he had to stay with his mother until he could recoup that money. (5:23)

I had to pay. I signed a no-NBA clause overseas. At the time the buyout for the NBA was only $250,000. I’m 22 years old, I don’t know the business side of it. I’m thinking like “They can pay the $1.6 million, NBA got that.”

My agent tells me “No, they can only pay $250,000”.

I’m looking at him like “so who pays the other $1.4 million?”

“You have to.”

Look at my mom, she’s in the corner.

“What do you think?”

“Your goal right, your dream?”

“Yes Ma’am”.

“Ok, cool.”

She pulls out a checkbook, literally checkbook out the purse. Gives the check to the Russian team, and I was able to leave.

I get my first check in the NBA… that motherf***er say 11,000 dollars. I’m living with my mom in the NBA. My mom is going out to do nails, and I’m going to NBA practice. I’m coming home like, “Yo, what we got for dinner?”

That was my life, my first couple of years in the NBA.

This is an absolutely wild story, and it is amazing to see that Patrick Beverley’s mother supported him in his dream. Patrick Beverley has signed multiple lucrative contracts since then and has had a productive NBA career thus far.

Patrick Beverley Has A Response To His Haters

Patrick Beverley has been on the end of some criticism from players and fans alike this year, even getting included in trade rumors. Recently, we saw Patrick Beverley clap back at the haters with a fact about how only a small amount of the population has actually played in the NBA, showing his belief that he belongs in the league.

“I heard a stat that was crazy, and it was only 3,400 people have played in the NBA, and only 1,300 of them are alive. And that’s counting guys who only played like 1 game. There are 8 billion people on earth,” Beverley said.

There is no doubt that getting to the NBA is an accomplishment in itself. That is the highest-level basketball league in the world, and only a select few get drafted to the league every year.

Hopefully, we see Patrick Beverley’s performance improve over the course of the season. His defense has still been fine, but if his offense improves, then the Los Angeles Lakers will greatly benefit as a team.
