NBA officials, like in any other sport, can never be perfect and most fans recognize that every game has at least a few errors and missed calls throughout the night. But on Sunday, Lakers fans witnessed a rare sight as referees awarded them two free throws due to an officiating mistake in the first quarter.
“The officials were notified at the end of the first period that the second foul committed by Lance was the second foul committed under two minutes. LA Lakers should have shot a penalty, but they did not. Also after that foul LA did not score or shoot free throws. So they will now shoot the free throws for the penalty and the game will continue,” announced the crew chief in front of a heated crowd.
This is wild — refs didn’t know the Lakers were supposed to shoot free throws when they got fouled with 1:40 left in the 1st quarter.
So they gave them free throws at the end of the quarter since they didn’t score that possession

It seems to have been an honest mistake by the officials but they were quick to recognize the mistake and offer the Lakers a free throw opportunity they should’ve had before. Of course, the points hardly made a difference in the final score, which was lopsided since the first half.
It was a commanding win for the Lakers And a great show of strength ahead of the playoffs. But with tensions so high right now and the margin for error so narrow, Lakers fans just don’t have the patience to deal with missed calls from the officials, especially when they’ve been so abundant lately.
With sports betting now a growing business in the NBA world, many believe the officials have been compromised and that they just can’t be trusted like they used to. While there are no grand conspiracies to fox these games, mistakes like the ones tonight are why suspicion is growing in the eyes of the fans. After all, for so many of these teams, it might only take one call to make or break their season.
