Since leaving the Houston Rockets in 2019, things haven’t been the same for former NBA MVP James Harden. While he’s still producing at a high level, his numbers have been down across the board over the last three and a half seasons, and his influence as a player seems to have taken a significant dip.
Still, he’s one of the best guards in the league, and he’s the type of offensive weapon that could push a championship hopeful over the top.
For now, he’s locked up in Philly with Joel Embiid, but there are rumblings that he could take his talents back to H-Town if things don’t work out.
In the latest report by ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, he dropped this bombshell on the future of the Beard:
“You know how the league works,” ESPN’s Tim MacMahon said. “There’s a lot of gossip. There’s a lot of dot-connecting, ‘Hey, if things don’t work out in Philly, James Harden back to Houston. Just keep an eye out on that.’”
Harden was at his best in a Rockets jersey, and what he was doing back is just not comparable to what he’s doing now. Over 9 seasons with the franchise, he averaged 29.6 points, 7.7 assists, and 1.8 steals per game on 44% shooting. He did it while consistently leading the Rockets deep into the playoffs, even pushing the Warriors dynasty to seven games at one point.
Today, the Rockets aren’t nearly as good, but neither is Harden. This season, James is hoping to change all that by staying healthy and finding success with his current team.
Can James Harden Win A Title With Joel Embiid?
On paper, James Harden and Joel Embiid are one of the best duos in basketball, and they’ve played like it since Harden came back from his injury this month.
But a lot of questions remain about the ceiling of this team and whether or not they have enough firepower to defeat the Bucks and Celtics in a series.
“The whole notion of getting to the first round, second round, conference finals, Finals, that don’t matter,” Embiid said on his title aspirations. “If you don’t win it all, it doesn’t matter why you lost. It probably makes it even worse … you feel like you just frickin’ wasted time. ‘Congrats, you made it to the conference finals. Congrats, you made it to the Finals.’ Did you win anything? Nope.”
The 76ers have looked pretty good after a slow start and are currently 5th in the East with a 17-12 record.
There is little doubt that this team still has a long way to go in terms of maximizing their talent, but being fully healthy after having several of their key guys out will go a long way toward righting the ship.
