Following a 9-point performance in the Summer League, Victor Wembanyama has been on the wrong end of jokes on social media, with half of the internet taking turns calling him a bust.

Admittedly, he looked nervous and out-of-sorts in his SL debut but it’s still way too early to make any judgments on his career. According to what one league source told insider Landon Buford, the whole culture around top picks and star expectations has gotten out of control.

“I think it’s time to start identifying the word bust and who created the term “bust”. Who is really the bust, when players do not pan out? The bust are writers/ reporters, and the guys who go overseas to do the evaluations [the scouts], and General Managers, who trust these guys who have never played basketball in the NBA or professionally. Those guys are the bust because those are the guys who created the hype machines behind the players. The player can’t be the bust, the people that invested and projected these things on these players those are the guys that should be called out.”

It’s never the players who project themselves to be on the level of legends, but the media, fans, and scouts are always quick to label these guys and their careers when it’s really the scouts and team front offices who determine the expectations of any given player.

“For example, all the guys who rated Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan, they are the biggest busts in basketball history, not Sam Bowie. We put so much pressure on the players based on what others think of them. When those are the guys who are really the bust in the situation. It’s not the players, it’s the talent evaluators. That’s my take on Wemby at this moment.”

Are Expectations Too High For Wembanyama?

When you watch Victor in action, it’s easy to notice the things he does well. As a great passer, brilliant scorer, and impressive ball-handler, the guy can do crazy things for someone of his size.

While Vic has embraced expectations so far, being called the greatest prospect since LeBron James himself.

“This is the most highly-anticipated player to ever enter the NBA,” said Adrian Wojnarowski. “Maybe the greatest prospect in the history of team sports.”

Only time will tell if Vic can live up to the hype but there is a lot of confidence in how his game will grow. But if he’s anything close to what people have made him out to be, then the Spurs are in good shape for years to come.
