The Dallas Mavericks are set to get a much-needed boost as they prepare for a key matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers. With injuries continuing to disrupt their rotation, the potential return of a cornerstone player could provide some short-term stability for a team trying to stay competitive in the Western Conference.
Head coach Jason Kidd said Anthony Davis is expected to play around 30-34 minutes against the 76ers after missing the last two games with a groin injury (via Ron Harrod Jr.). The plan is to ease Davis back into action while still allowing him enough run to impact the game on both ends, as Dallas looks to reintegrate him into the lineup without overextending him physically.
Davis’ return comes as the Mavericks continue to deal with multiple absences. Dereck Lively II remains out for the season as he recovers from foot surgery, while Kyrie Irving and Dante Exum are expected to be sidelined with knee injuries. These setbacks have forced Dallas to rely heavily on its remaining healthy pieces, often stretching lineups thin and limiting flexibility on both offense and defense.
At 12-22, the lack of consistency has taken its toll on the Mavericks. Extended absences from key contributors have made it difficult for the team to build any rhythm. While Dallas has flashed its ceiling when relatively healthy, those moments have been difficult to sustain amid constant lineup changes.
Anthony Davis, in particular, has been routinely unavailable for the Mavericks. He has been strong when healthy this season, averaging 20.5 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.6 blocks per game on 52.1% shooting (32.3% from three). Unfortunately, various injuries have limited Davis to just 16 of the team’s 34 games so far.
With him back in the lineup, there is renewed hope the Mavericks can make a run and begin climbing the Western Conference standings. Sitting 12th, they still have a long way to go, but the combined efforts of Davis, Cooper Flagg, Klay Thompson, and Daniel Gafford may be enough to give them a chance.
If not, the Mavericks could turn to the trade market as a last resort. With teams like the Hawks, Warriors, and Pistons emerging as potential suitors, Davis could draw significant interest ahead of February’s trade deadline. How he performs over the next stretch of games may ultimately determine his future in Dallas.
Looking ahead, the Mavericks face the Rockets at home following Thursday’s game, then head west to face the Sacramento Kings on the road before a rematch against the Utah Jazz.
With several tough games and a road trip approaching, this will be a critical stretch for Dallas. How the Mavericks respond could make or break their season and help define the next phase of their team-building plan. At this stage, every game matters, and while Anthony Davis’ return offers hope, it also brings heightened urgency for a team running out of excuses.
