It’s been a bitter scene in Dallas lately, and team owner/governor Patrick Dumont felt all of the heat in his latest visit to the American Airlines Center. In a viral video making the rounds online, the billionaire can be seen heading back to his court-side seat to a loud ring of boos. He didn’t even know they were meant for him until he got back to his seat, to which he could be seen saying “Is that for me?”

The fans were quick to call Dumont out of touch for not immediately knowing that the fans were booing him.

“Wow… he really thinks everything is fine,” wrote one fan in disbelief.

Another fan spoke on his unpopularity, the state of which may not even be known to Dumont right now.

“He might be the most unpopular person in Dallas right now.”

Mavericks fans are still reeling after the trade that sent their 25-year-old superstar to the Los Angeles Lakers. Doncic, who is widely considered a top-five player in the game, did not ask for a trade and he was certain about accepting a potential supermax contract extension this summer.

“He shouldn’t have given that interview,” wrote one fan on X. “Even if you wanted to trade Luka, there was no need to trash him as he went out the door. That’s a low-class move.”

It was the move directed and initiated by the Mavericks, specifically GM Nico Harrison. Now, without Luka, and their new star (Anthony Davis) sidelined for weeks, the fans are livid and they are letting Mr. Dumont in the only way they know how.

It’s not just during the game that the fans were expressing their grief. In fact, ever since the Luka trade, it’s been doom and gloom for Mavericks fans. In the hours following the deal, they protested outside the arena and many gathered up to make a makeshift memorial. Of course, some fans have gone to the extreme by issuing death threats to Nico Harrison and other Mavericks personnel.

In response, the move from Dumont has been to point the blame at Luka. Despite leading the Mavericks to the Finals last year, Doncic is being accused of poor conditioning and lazy work ethic. The Mavericks even said he was pushing 300 pounds at one point last season.

Needless to say, it’s nothing but chaos and mayhem for the Mavericks right now and Dumont is still relatively new on the job as an owner since 2023. He bought the team from the notorious Mark Cuban, who once promised Mavericks fans that he would never trade Luka.

But without control of the team, Cuban lost his voice, and the Mavericks moved off of Doncic for the sake of maximizing their title window for the next 2-3 years. Since it was a secret negotiation with the Lakers, no other teams were even allowed to bid for Doncic.

It remains to be seen what happens from here but the Mavericks must win within the next 5 years to justify trading Doncic. This is the kind of deal that no fan will forget and only by achieving ultimate success can they hope to start making things right.
