Joel Embiid definitely has a polarizing reputation. People either love him or hate him. We know where Timberwolves commentator Jim Peterson stands, as he went off on Embiid during a game against the Spurs. He brought up Embiid for seemingly no reason, calling him out for missing several games, and then suggested that there is no flopper worse than him in the NBA.
“Joel Embiid, they both had exchanges. But Embiid got tossed for complaining about a flop that Wemby went to. There’s so much that bothers me about that video. First of all, I wish he’d be as angry about not playing games as he is about a call a referee made. Second part of is that he is the ultimate flopper. Is there a worse flopper in the game than Joel Embiid?”
Truly insane stuff from Wolves commentator going after Embiid…

In the closing minutes of a close game…

The commentator is referencing Embiid’s incident last week, as he got tossed out of a game after getting in a female referee’s face very aggressively after losing his cool. It was a bad look for Embiid, who seemingly lost his head after the referee missed a call.
You can understand the frustration, giving the referee had also incorrectly ejected Andre Drummond from the same game. But that is still no reason for him to be so aggressive and go into a fit of rage.
As far as Embiid’s simulation, the commentator does have a point. The Cameroonian big man does have a tendency to overact and flail himself in order to draw fouls. However, one has to ask the question of what pertinence Embiid’s flopping had with the Timberwolves game against the Spurs, other than the Timberwolves players having a similar issue with him on a play.
It was a completely unnecessary dig the commentator took at Embiid, regardless of the merit his comments had.
Embiid Doing Well Since Return
Don’t look now, but Joel Embiid seems to have helped the 76ers figure things out since returning. The 76ers are 5-1 since Embiid’s return, and he specifically has been sensational in the last six games, averaging 24.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game, while shooting 46.7% from the field, 37.5% from the three-point line, and 88.4% from the free-throw line.
The former MVP was crucial in the 76ers’ massive and unlikely Christmas Day win against the Boston Celtics. Before the game, he seemed to have injured himself during the warmups. But he still came back to upset the Celtics, putting up 27 points, nine rebounds, and two assists in the 118-114 win.
Embiid was definitely feeling himself during the game, as he made a massive three-pointer against the Celtics, and responded by making a crude gesture. Embiid was subsequently fined $75,000 for his actions after the game, as the referees didn’t spot his actions during the game.
The 76ers are finding their groove now, as they currently are 12-17 and hold the 11th seed in the Eastern Conference. And if they continue this run of form, they are sure to break into the top of the East come the end of the season.
