- Paul George described the 2020 Orlando Bubble as a ‘prison’
- Minnesota Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns agreed with Paul George’s assessment of the NBA Bubble
- The NBA Bubble was placed to protect players from getting COVID-19 while playing basketball
The world was dealing with the COVID-19 breakout in 2020, including the NBA. To protect the players while continuing to entertain fans, the league decided to build the Orlando Bubble.
It was a unique situation for NBA players and certainly restrictive in some aspects. In fact, Paul George and Karl-Anthony Towns described the 2020 NBA Bubble as a ‘prison’ in a recent episode of Podcast P.
“The Bubble was prison, bro,” George said. “They sold us all this s**t before we got to the Bubble. We’re gonna have the park amenities, Disneyland’s gonna be available, the golf courses, fishin’ ponds, [and] the lakes.”
He added: “But that was all phases. We had to damn near wait for them to slowly start to open s**t up for us two months.”
Towns wondered if George and others were allowed to use rollercoasters.
“No,” PG13 responded. “Basically, we was just livin’ like in jail. I used to just watch cars go by, and you would just watch people run around the border because you couldn’t cross outside that border or you would get flagged. You had to go in isolation. Free me!”

Despite such struggles, Paul George and the Los Angeles Clippers managed to reach the 2020 Western Conference Semifinals. However, they were defeated 4-3 by the Denver Nuggets and were sent home.
On the other hand, Karl-Anthony Towns’s Minnesota Timberwolves were 19-45 in the regular season and finished as the 14th seed in the Western Conference. Evidently, they didn’t receive a call-up to play in the Orlando Bubble.
NBA Players Have Had Mixed Reactions To The 2020 Orlando Bubble
During the 2020 NBA Bubble, fans witnessed some of the purest basketball being played. After all, there were no distractions for the players. Former NBA player Lamar Odom loved the Bubble because there were no shenanigans and players straight up hooped.
While it’s true the level of basketball was simply amazing in the Bubble, but players were still apart from their families. LeBron James and Steven Adams had completely different reactions to playing there.
LeBron James: “And if you were not in the Bubble, you don’t quite understand it. This is literally out of your whole comfort zone. No family, I didn’t see my family for eight and a half weeks. And my room, literally seeing the walls, it’s like The Shining. Just like, coming down the walls.”
Steven Adams: “It’s all good, mate. Let’s be clear mate, it’s not Syria mate. It’s not that hard. It’s not that difficult. We’re living on a bloody resort.”
Despite being away from his family, LeBron James fulfilled his duty for the Los Angeles Lakers. He led the team to the 2020 NBA Championship and averaged 27.6 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 8.8 assists over 21 games.
