As the NBA 2022-23 regular season draws to a close, the focus is on the MVP, and journalist Ryen Russillo shed light on Joel Embiid’s comment on MVP and how he was convinced by people around him that everyone was against the Philadelphia 76ers star.

“He does care, and you should care. I want guys to care about this stuff…” Russillo said on The Bill Simmons Podcast. “The only thing with Embiid that I don’t like, and I think it’s more the people around him that get in his head about how everyone is against him.”

“Honestly dude for someone who doesn’t have that much playoff success he actually escapes the kind of criticism that we would have for a player that is his level,” Russillo further added. “Normally this guy is getting shit on at this stage of his career, and I don’t think that happens from a national or neutral level.”

The Nikola Jokic vs. Joel Embiid for MVP debate has raged on since the start of the year. The battle of the centers has seen the Serbian take the lead, although fans have been divided between the two.

From a statistics viewpoint, Jokic has been averaging 24.7 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 9.9 assists this season, while Embiid has propped up 33.5 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 4.2 assists. Both bigs have been instrumental in their sides’ stellar run this season.

Joel Embiid Shares His Two Cents On The NBA 2022-23 MVP Chatter

An MVP award would be the first for Embiid, but the Frenchman’s response to the whole debate could be called cold at best. When asked about his thoughts on the heating-up MVP race, Embiid didn’t seem to care much.

“MVPs, Defensive Player of the Year, that doesn’t mean anything to me,” Embiid opined. “I’m still going to be the best player on the floor.”

When asked further about who his favorite was to win, “I don’t know, that’s not for me to answer,” the center replied.

“I feel like, obviously, being in the run for the last two years has been whatever. This year, I’ve taken a different approach, just trying to focus on the right things. Win games. Dominate, which I’ve been doing. And whatever happens, happens.”

The Jokic vs. Embiid isn’t stopping anytime soon, and only time will tell who the winner would be. But there is no doubt that the award doesn’t necessarily determine who the greatest was between the duo.
