It was around this time back in 2021 that the Atlanta Hawks made a coaching change that completely transformed their season. The Hawks were 14-20 when they fired then-head coach Lloyd Pierce and Nate McMillan then proceeded to take them to the Eastern Conference Finals.

They are hoping for something similar after firing McMillan, as the team is closing in on Quin Snyder as their new head coach. NBA insider Shams Charania is now reporting that Snyder is nearing a deal with the Hawks worth about $8 million per year.

“Quin Snyder is nearing a deal to become the new head coach of the Atlanta Hawks, with a significant contract that is expected to be in the $8 million per year range, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium.”

That is quite a show of faith in Snyder, as that deal would mean he would be one of the 5-highest paid coaches in the league. He did quite a good job as the head coach of the Utah Jazz and provided some stability to a franchise that was struggling before his arrival. They won at least 44 games in each of his last 6 seasons, with 3 of them seeing the franchise hit the 50-win mark.

Trae Young Spoke On Nate McMillan’s Departure

McMillan’s days in Atlanta were numbered after he clashed with Trae Young at the start of the season and the guard has come under fire now after his departure. Young made it clear that he has nothing but love and respect for his former coach and also fired back at the notion that he is a coach killer.

Their first game without McMillan went just fine, as the Hawks crushed the Cleveland Cavaliers, with Young scoring a game-high 34 points. Dejounte Murray, meanwhile, nearly had a triple-double and they’ll need their star backcourt to keep this up if they are to turn this season around.
