Reed Sheppard made history by becoming the first sub 6’3″ white guard to be drafted as a top-three pick since Ernie DiGregorio was selected 3rd overall by the Buffalo Braves in 1973. The Houston Rockets chose Sheppard with the No. 3 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, marking a significant moment for both the player and the franchise.

Sheppard’s selection was a bit of a surprise, as many experts predicted he would be picked in the mid-teens or even later. However, his performance during his freshman season at Kentucky evidently impressed the Rockets enough to secure him early in the draft.

His stats are remarkable: he averaged 12.5 points, 4.5 assists, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per game, shooting 53.6% from the field, 52.1% from three-point range, and 83.1% from the free-throw line. His shooting efficiency and defensive prowess made him a standout player.

Sheppard’s achievements are notable not just for his draft position but also for his accolades. He was named National Freshman of the Year and SEC Freshman of the Year, earning All-SEC Second Team honors. He was the only player in college basketball to record at least 145 assists, 80 steals, and 75 three-pointers in a season, showcasing his all-around game.

His journey to the NBA is particularly inspiring given his background. Sheppard hails from London, Kentucky, and followed in the footsteps of his parents, who were both basketball stars at Kentucky in the 1990s.

His father, Jeff Sheppard, won two national championships and was the Most Outstanding Player of the 1998 Final Four, while his mother, Stacey Sheppard, still ranks in the top seven in school history for assists, steals, and three-pointers made.

The Rockets see Sheppard as a key piece in their rebuilding process. With young talents like Jalen Green and a head coach in Ime Udoka, Houston is looking to develop a fast-paced, dynamic team. Sheppard’s shooting ability fits perfectly with the Rockets’ need for three-point accuracy, as they ranked among the worst in shooting efficiency last season despite being in the top ten for attempts.

Sheppard’s enthusiasm for joining the Rockets was evident in his comments post-draft.

“I’m super excited. They have a really good thing going in Houston. The coach is really good. Like you said, Jalen.”

“They have a bunch of really young, athletic guys, and we’ll be able to play fast. It’s going to be fun. I’m super excited to get out there and learn and take it all in, so I can’t wait.”

He expressed excitement about the team’s direction and the opportunity to grow alongside young, athletic players under Udoka’s coaching.

This selection not only highlights Sheppard’s talent but also signals the Rockets’ commitment to building a competitive and entertaining team for the future.
