Steve Kerr was brutally honest when he graded the Golden State Warriors as the NBA 2022-23 hit the midway point.
The Warriors have looked a far cry from the elite unit they were last season, and after losing three games in a row, they are placed eighth in the Western Conference.
That they lost Stephen Curry for 11 games due to a shoulder injury further compounded their woes, and while Klay Thompson and Jordan Poole had a few impact performances, it wasn’t the same clinical basketball that was expected of them leading into this season.
Kerr was savage when he was asked about the team’s journey so far. When asked how he would grade the team this season, he was pretty candid. Per FanNation:
“C,” Kerr said. “We haven’t been good enough. We’re passing the class because we’re right in the thick of everything playoff-wise… We got to do better.”
He further added that the losses against teams they are expected to win hurt:
“When those nights happen, I kick myself afterward for not walking into the locker room and banging on the walls during our pregame meeting and yelling, ‘Do you guys understand what’s about to happen,'” Steve Kerr exclaimed.
The Warriors are 20-21 after their loss to the Phoenix Suns. They do have a silver lining in the form of Curry’s return.
Steve Kerr On The Warriors’ Loss Against The Suns: “I Take Responsibility”
Kerr held himself accountable when sharing his two cents on the Warriors’ defeat against a short-handed Phoenix outfit. The latter was missing their trio of Devin Booker, Chris Paul, and Deandre Ayton, but still notched up a 125-113 win.
Speaking to the media in the aftermath of the upset win the Suns pulled off, Kerr took it on himself.
“I take responsibility for that. I clearly didn’t have our guys ready to play and that’s my fault. I’ve got to do a better job of giving them the slap in the face that Phoenix gave us in the first quarter. These games, they always go like this. A team’s got a bunch of starters out and then all the guys who normally don’t play much, they can’t wait to get out there.”
“So I think the combination of that dynamic and then us getting some guys back and trying to find our rhythm, it really got us off to a slow start. But I did like the fact that we competed in that fourth quarter and fought like crazy because sometimes in this league, you forgot how hard it is to win a game. It’s really hard to win an NBA game and the difference between winning and losing is like that.”
The Warriors will look to bounce back when they take on the San Antonio Spurs in front of a record-setting crowd at the Alamodome on Friday.
