There are few men in the NBA who would know both Michael Jordan and Stephen Curry as well as Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr. Kerr played with Jordan on the Chicago Bulls and now coaches Curry, and he spoke to NBCS Bay Area about the similarities between the two.
“I see their similarities, and I see their differences,” Kerr said. “The biggest similarity is the work ethic. Michael, like Steph, put every single ounce of energy into getting better every single year, constantly searching for ways to get better.”
Kerr also added that while Curry’s demeanor on the court may not give the impression of it, he’s ultra-competitive, just like Jordan was.
“It’s the focus and the competitive desire,” Kerr stated. “People don’t know how competitive Steph is. They knew how competitive Michael was. They don’t know how competitive Steph is because they see him smiling and laughing, but he’s a killer. He and Michael both are absolute killers, but they’re different people, different human beings.”
There is a reason why Curry is called the “Baby-Faced Assassin”. You shouldn’t be fooled by all the smiling, because he is a killer on the court. He relishes in silencing opposing crowds and ripping the hearts out of them. The 35-year-old has done it time and time again in his career, and this season has been no different.
Coming into the game against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday night, Curry has averaged 31.0 points. 5.2 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.0 steals per game this season. He then hit the game-winner against the Thunder in what was yet another example of him being a cold-blooded killer on the court.
Steve Kerr Once Called Stephen Curry The Modern MJ
This is far from the first time that Kerr has compared his superstar point guard to his former teammate. After he exploded for 41 points against the Washington Wizards last season, Kerr hailed Curry as the ‘Modern MJ’.
He then saw the two-time MVP put on a performance for the ages in Game 7 against the Sacramento Kings, where he scored 50 points to lead the Warriors to victory. Kerr then likened Curry to Jordan for being brilliant on a nightly basis.
He stated that players like the two of them get taken for granted for how they manage to perform at a high level in almost every single game. Kerr said you have to remind yourself from time to time that you’re witnessing one of the all-time greats when you watch Curry and it was a similar feeling when he played alongside Jordan.
Stephen Curry On How Michael Jordan’s Leadership Style Inspired Him
Curry and Jordan may have a similar competitive mindset and are two of the greatest ever, but they’re still very different from each other. The former isn’t really a vocal, get-in-your-face kind of character while the latter certainly was. Still, there were some things he could take from the Bulls legend and Curry explained how Jordan’s leadership style inspired him.
“What Michael said, what MJ said in his documentary about not expecting anybody else to do something he wouldn’t necessarily do on the court. And the work and all that. There’s an element of that. There’s an element of awareness, the value of everybody in the locker room.”
He has taken inspiration from some of the greats and has implemented some of what they did in his own leadership style. Curry is now not only one of the best players in the league but also one of the best leaders.
