One of the biggest bombshells in recent memory occurred this week, as the Golden State Warriors traded Jordan Poole to the Washington Wizards to land veteran superstar point guard Chris Paul. Poole was once lauded as the future of the Warriors, but after a tough season, the Warriors decided it was time to cut short the experiment with Poole.
In a recent interview with The Athletic, Steve Kerr was asked why the Golden State Warriors decided to trade Jordan Poole away to the Wizards. Kerr gave a very simple explanation, that it was time to make a shift in the team, and that they need to make a change that could help them get back to championship contention.
“We’re going to be a lot different. The last thing I’m going to do is say anything about a team that just won a championship a year ago and then fought through a difficult season. Made a helluva run at the end of this year. I’ve loved this group that we’ve had (for) the last couple (of) years.
“But the biggest point is that we sensed we needed a shift. Didn’t mean we needed an overhaul, but we needed a shift of some sort. I think everybody in the organization sensed that. And it feels like we’ve made a pretty significant shift without giving up our identity and our sense of who we are as a team. I think, all in all, it’s a very positive shift.”
Kerr clearly doesn’t think there was any animosity that came into the decision, but only that the squad needed a refresh.
Chris Paul On The Warriors Could Be Dangerous
While the Warriors still have one of the best players in the world, Stephen Curry, combining him with Chris Paul could make the Warriors even better. Paul is one of the best passers of all time, and if he can be trusted to get the ball to the greatest shooter of all time, the Warriors could steamroll through the competition.
There is the concern of Draymond Green, however. Green punching Poole seemingly destroyed their chemistry and could have factored in the decision to trade him. But a resurfaced clip of Green admitting he and the point god don’t have a good relationship means that there is another wrinkle for the Warriors to manage.
Poole, on the other hand, will be the centerpiece for a rebuilding Wizards squad. Being the primary option for the Wizards will allow him to further unlock his game. Poole averaged 20.4 points, 4.5 assists, and 2.7 rebounds last season as a third option. So one can imagine how his numbers will improve as the main player.
