There was a time when Steve Kerr enjoyed pickup basketball more than the NBA, and he has his reasons.
Talking about his pickup playing days, the now Golden State Warriors head coach revealed he had played friendly games with his pals that were a lot more enjoyable than his time in the league. Per Sportscasting:
“I actually enjoyed the pickup ball more than the NBA because I was finally the most talented player on the floor. I could actually cross somebody up and get to the rim. I’d be like, ‘What just happened?’”
Prior to winning four titles with Golden State as their head coach, Kerr won three titles with the Chicago Bulls and two with the San Antonio Spurs as a player before calling time on his decorated career in 2003. While he did play pickup ball after, a knee scope forced him to quit playing.
Kerr was the Bulls’ go-to sharpshooter during their three-peat, as he drained a whopping 45.4 percent from beyond the arc. During the 1994-95 season, Kerr finished the season with a blistering 52.4 percent from the three-point line.
The most iconic moment in Kerr’s career was when he nailed the game-winning jumper in Game 6 of the 1997 NBA Finals to beat the Utah Jazz. This would go down as the defining moment in his career. And he’s had so much time and chemistry with both Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen he even named them on his All-time starting list.
In his five seasons with the Bulls, Kerr averaged 8.2 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 2.2 assists, and overall career averages see him tally 6.0 points, 1.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assists.
There was no doubt that while the trio of Jordan, Pippen, and Dennis Rodman were the ‘Big 3’ for the Bulls, Kerr was their reliable sniper. And he surely did his job to perfection.
Steve Kerr Was Also A Loyal Teammate
In addition to his sharpshooting skills, Steve Kerr was also a loyal friend to his teammates, and Scottie Pippen will vouch for it.
In an ESPN interview earlier, Kerr joined Rachel Nichols and Pippen, who were part of the special edition. The former ESPN journalist offered a warm welcome and also added, “I texted you yesterday and said get your embarrassing stories about Scottie Pippen ready, and you’re no fun, you said you’re not gonna do it.”
“When a guy basically gets you three rings… you don’t make fun of him,” Kerr said with a smile.
This speaks volumes about Kerr’s loyalty as a teammate. While he may have been able to generate a few laughs with an embarrassing story about Pippen, he decided to be the ultimate team man. And that means props to Kerr for being the personality that he is.
