It had been a foregone conclusion for a long time now that Victor Wembanyama would be the first pick of the 2023 NBA Draft. Who was going to be picked after him by the Charlotte Hornets with the second pick, though was still in doubt, with Scoot Henderson and Brandon Miller in the mix.
Both had workouts with the Hornets last week, with Henderson being the better performer of the two. The team, however, decided to have another round of workouts, and it appears Miller has now solidified himself as the second pick, as per Adrian Wojnarowski.
“Brandon Miller further solidified his standing as Charlotte’s choice at No. 2 with a workout and meetings he had in Charlotte yesterday,” Wojnarowski said. “This is the first time Michael Jordan, the outgoing majority owner in Charlotte, had a chance to watch Miller in person, to sit down and meet with him. And both Miller and Scoot Henderson came back to Charlotte for second workouts and second meetings and I’m told Miller was better the second time around.”
Miller made the most of the second opportunity and seems to have impressed Michael Jordan. Wojnarowski also stated that the franchise believes Miller is the better fit with LaMelo Ball.
“Certainly positionally, Miller’s advantage over Scoot Henderson in Charlotte is that they’ve got a point guard in LaMelo Ball in Charlotte who they believe is a franchise-level point guard,” Wojnarowski continued. “And right now, Brandon Miller continues to be the focus for the Hornets at No. 2.”
A forward like Miller would certainly be a better fit alongside LaMelo as compared to Henderson, who is a point guard. Miller had a pretty good season for Alabama in 2022-23, with averages of 18.8 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 2.1 APG, 0.9 SPG, and 0.9 BPG. The only real concern surrounding Miller is the off-the-court issues, but the Hornets don’t seem to be bothered by that.
Can Brandon Miller And LaMelo Ball Revive The Hornets?
There was some big news coming from Charlotte earlier this month, with Jordan bringing an end to his 13-year run as the majority owner. The lack of success the team had under his ownership probably had a part to play in Jordan selling the team and the hope would be that the new owners can bring a change in their fortunes.
They already have one fine foundational piece in Ball, who was an All-Star in 2022, for that and if Miller lives up to the hype, they can form one of the best young duos in the league. Together, they would certainly be capable of reviving the Hornets and giving their fans hope for a great future, something the fanbase hasn’t had for years.
