The great Bill Russell passed away earlier this year in what was a big loss to the NBA community. Russell was an icon in every sense of the word and while he was an unbelievable player, he was also immense off the court at a time when racial tensions were at their highest in the U.S.

While Russell is mainly remembered for winning a ridiculous 11 championships with the Boston Celtics, he first made a name for himself in the Bay Area. Russell’s family moved to California from Louisiana when he was just eight years old and he then played college basketball at the University of San Francisco. He led them to two national championships in 1955 and 1956 to make himself a Bay Area legend. So, it was only fitting that when the Golden State Warriors welcomed the Celtics to the Bay, they also decided to hang Russell’s no. 6 in the rafters to honor him.

Russell’s number had been retired across the league before this season but the Warriors decided to honor him further by having his number up in the rafters, considering his deep ties to the area. It really was a great gesture and you love to see it.

How The Boston Celtics Have Paid Tribute To Bill Russell This Season

The Celtics have also done a lot in honor of Russell this season, as they have his no. 6 on their home court floor this season. They also wore a Russell-inspired city edition jersey on opening night and it would be incredible if they go on to win a title this season in his honor.

They have a very good chance too, as Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown have been simply spectacular so far. The duo has led the Celtics to the best record in the NBA but they did end up losing to the Warriors on this special night.
