The 2023 NBA Draft has been an active night, with moves being made all across the draft board. We started the night with a big decision, as the Hornets committed to selecting Brandon Miller out of Alabama with their second overall pick, snubbing Scoot Henderson.

Fans aren’t thrilled about the pick and it seems even Hornets mascot Hugo was really unhappy during a live draft screening at the Hornets arena.

The pick is going to be controversial until Miller and Scoot both hit the court and can prove who is better. It might even be a good thing for both players, as Miller will be motivated to prove the doubters wrong and Scoot will be ready to show that he didn’t deserve to fall beyond the second pick.

Brandon Miller And LaMelo Ball Will Fit Well

Henderson is sensational and could have created a dangerous backcourt with LaMelo, with both players having complementary skill sets. Henderson wouldn’t get to use the full range of his playmaking, but his ability to cut and finish at the rim would’ve been heightened. His defensive pressure would be a huge addition to a Hornets’ squad with no exceptional perimeter defenders.

Miller, on the other hand, is a more natural fit. He is in a different position and won’t take the ball out of LaMelo’s hands as often as Henderson would. He can score at all three levels of the court, but there are questions about his physicality. His defense projects to be very good, but it may take a few seasons to fully develop.

Miller averaged 18.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.9 blocks per game in his sole season with the University of Alabama while Henderson averaged 15.5 points, 6.0 assists, 4.7 rebounds, 1.1 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game in his sophomore season with the G League Ignite.
