After having a magical 2021/22 NBA season, the New Orleans Pelicans are ready to improve what they did, and they’re working hard to assemble the best possible team to compete for important things in the Western Conference. Fortunately, they have reportedly secured their superstar for the future, as Zion Williamson has agreed to an extension.

The young forward missed the entire 2021/22 season with a foot injury, but now he’s ready to return to the court and prove that we haven’t seen the best from him yet. Williamson is still young and has a lot to show in his career, which is why the Pelicans are all-in on him.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the former No. 1 overall pick is nearing a five-year, $231 million deal with the Pels after several months of speculation about the type of deal he would get given how ‘bad’ his relationship with team GM David Griffin is.

Williamson said after the season ended, “I couldn’t sign it fast enough.” Indeed, the All-Star locks in commitment to New Orleans.

The deal is expected to include protections that both sides were sorting through overnight and will finalize, sources said. https://t.co/n0hyRwRk9e

New Orleans Pelicans star Zion Williamson is nearing a five-year rookie max contract extension worth up to $231 million, sources tell The Athletic, Stadium. The commitment will take Williamson’s new deal through the 2027-28 season.

After a tumultuous 2021/22 season where he was involved in many rumors regarding his weight and commitment to the team, the situation is clearer for Zion and his team. Recently, he’s been spotted spending time with children, playing games, cheering them up, and even trash-talking them. He’s shown his commitment to the Pelicans and the city of New Orleans, and you just love to see it.

The Pelicans have something good in their hands. If they keep improving their level and Zion’s game only gets better, they could become a threat in the West in the future. It’s too early to tell what will happen, but this team can do good things in the next couple of years.
