At over 74 years old, Gregg Popovich is the oldest active coach in the entire NBA… and he’s not done yet. As announced today by The Atheltic’s Shams Charania, Popovich and the Spurs have agreed to a five-year contract extension that will set him up to finally retire at almost 80 years old.

“Just In: San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich – the winningest NBA coach of all-time – has signed a new five-year contract extension with the franchise.”

Coach Pop has been a franchise figurehead for decades now and there was speculation that he would walk away from the job after Tim Duncan retired in 2016. But he stayed on to lead the Spurs through a rebuild, which paid off this past summer when they landed Victor Wembanyama with the first overall pick.

Now, despite many decades of experience, Popovich will stay on to coach Wembanyama for the first stage of his career.

How Will Victor Wembanyama And Gregg Popovich Work Together?

The makings of any true title-contending teams no just about having the right players. It’s also about having the players buy-in to a tried and tested system.

For Victor, he’s never been in this situation before and he’s juggling big expectations but there is a sense that Popovich will help him navigate through the noise and find his footing in the league.

“Honest relationship,” Wembanyama said. “I’ve had coaches who didn’t always tell me the truth and I hated that. I’m confident that when I get the chance to get coached by coach Popovich, he doesn’t lie to his players. He tells the truth. Sometimes it’s harsh, it’s hard, but this is what I want.”

With Popovich on board for the foreseeable future, the Spurs can get to work on building their ideal team for Victor Wembanyama. The process will be long and rough at times, but there isn’t a team in the league with a bright future and it’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out.
