The Los Angeles Lakers are currently 14-21 after their latest loss against the Miami Heat, and there is no real end in sight for the franchise’s troubles at the moment. After winning the NBA championship in 2020, they have regressed every season and are in danger of missing the playoffs once again this season. And it’s hard to say this hasn’t been coming.

Magic Johnson is one of the most legendary players in the history of the game. It’s not just on the court that he was great, though, he has utilized his mind to reach the next level off the court as well. And Magic was the man responsible for bringing LeBron James to the franchise, even though it seems like the King is now on his way out.

Magic was the President of Basketball Operations for his beloved Lakers from 2017 to 2019, but he resigned after things went sour with the team. He wanted to fire Head Coach Luke Walton, but Jeanie Buss wouldn’t listen to him, as he later revealed. And what he said after leaving the franchise in 2019 has all proven accurate within 3 seasons.

Magic Johnson Revealed The Lakers’ Issues In 2019 And Those Seem To Have Cost Them

While Magic Johnson is generally genial and not one to hold grudges, Rob Pelinka’s name came up as someone who betrayed him when he left. And Magic highlighted the Lakers’ front office issues on ESPN in 2019, all of which have clearly been a factor in the team struggling these last few seasons.

“I think if you wanna talk about betrayal, it’s only with Rob. But again, I had to look inside myself, but I had been doing that for months. Because I didn’t like that Tim Harris was too involved. He supposed to run the Laker business, but he was trying to come over to our side. Jeanie’s gotta stop that, right. You gotta stop people from having those voices. It’s too many people at the table.

“And so what happens, everybody gets to share their opinion and it’s so much information coming at her, then when I say, ‘Hey, we have to do this,’ she can’t come to a decision because they said no. Don’t go the way Magic go… So, her love for those people and respect for those people often caused us to not make the right choice or there’s no decision. And so I said you can’t run a corporation like this, you can’t let everybody think they have a voice or opinion about the final decision.”

A lot of the problems the Lakers have had in terms of personnel and roster decisions have been thanks to this multitude of voices. It’s hard to see who the main authority is in the front office, and that can cause chaos and confusion. Ultimately, Jeanie Buss has to figure things out because another season missing the play-in tournament will earn the wrath of Laker Nation at a level that hasn’t been seen in a while.
