Becky Hammon is a name that has come up a lot in recent years. Having spent eight years as an assistant coach to Gregg Popovich, which came after a 16-year playing career including the WNBA, Hammon is one of the most well-respected names in the basketball world.
The latest mention of Becky Hammon came regarding the Toronto Raptors coaching vacancy. While it would be historic for her to get the job, though, Hammon isn’t necessarily desperate to get it, telling Time magazine her reason.
“My happiness is most important,” she says. She points out that the NBA’s 82-game grind, for example, is punishing for any parent of young children; the WNBA’s 40-game schedule, which spans summer vacation, is much more family-friendly. “I love being here,” she says. “I love being back on the women’s side. I don’t need the stamp of approval from the NBA.”
The NBA’s regular season schedule can be grueling, playing 82 games in essentially six months is quite intense. Hammon has a point on that front, the WNBA’s schedule is a lot more accommodating in terms of time. She is also a championship-winning coach with the Las Vegas Aces and a key component in growing the popularity of the WNBA, which means it might not be a no-brainer for her to take up an NBA job.
Becky Hammon Was Brutally Honest About Why She Doesn’t Have An NBA Head Coaching Job
Becky Hammon trained under Gregg Popovich, one of the greatest ever, for eight years. She has also interviewed for quite a few NBA jobs during her time. She has yet to be presented with the opportunity, and during the interview, she got honest about why that is.
“When something’s never been done, or they don’t know how it looks, they’re scared,” says Hammon, with a Texas twang she picked up over all those years in San Antonio.
“People don’t like different. And look, I’ve been different my whole life. I don’t look the part. I’m telling you, it helps to look the part.” There’s only so much Hammon can control at this stage. “If I walk in the room and I have the biggest set of b*lls in the room, it’s not going to work,” she says. “Because it’s going to take somebody that is not afraid to make a hard choice.”
Becky Hammon is set to be a Hall-Of-Famer, having been a 6-time WNBA All-Star, and a WNBA champion as Head Coach. She has achieved a lot in her career already, and she is a prime candidate to do something truly historic by becoming the first woman to coach a group of men in professional sports. How her story plays out remains to be seen, but she’s prioritizing her needs more than anything else.
