The Boston Celtics and Joe Mazzulla have been in the eye of the storm after going down 0-3 to the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals, prompting Bill Simmons to say that the head coach wouldn’t return next season.

“I feel bad,” Simmons said on his podcast. “15 years ago, I would have been destroying this coach week after week and I would have had nicknames for him and done the whole thing, but I actually feel bad for him. I think he was in a horrible situation.”

He further added: “Joe Mazz, two years basically sitting in the second row — that’s what my dad calls him “second-row Joe” and he just gets thrown in like, with his skeleton coaching staff. And I can’t think of a worse situation that a new coach has been thrown into. It’s not like they could have hired somebody else because the season was about to start.”

“I don’t think he will come back,” Simmons said when asked if he would be fired by the Celtics if the team failed to get past Miami.

While there is no official chatter from the Celtics camp on Mazzulla’s future, the NBA analyst surely seems confident that the latter would not return to helm Boston in the future.

Earlier, it was another NBA insider who targeted the team and Mazzulla. “What an embarrassment. The Celtics are a mentally weak team with a clueless head coach. Big changes should come this summer,” wrote Kevin O’Connor.

Joe Mazzulla Reacts To Game 3 Loss Against The Miami Heat

Mazzulla’s words after the Game 3 loss resonated with dejection and frustration. Speaking to the media in the aftermath of the blowout 128-102 defeat, he expressed the need to be better.

“Yeah, it’s why I need to be better to figure out what this team needs.” And there is no doubt that this speaks highly of a man who has borne full responsibility for the upset turn for the Celtics in the Conference Finals.

While it isn’t game over for the Celtics yet, they should know that coming back from a 0-3 deficit will be historic and almost mission impossible, but maybe Mazzulla and the team can regroup to see if they can get their mojo back.
