Mikal Bridges played under Monty Williams for three and a half seasons on the Phoenix Suns and gained a ton of respect for him in that time.

Bridges, who was traded to the Brooklyn Nets as part of the package for Kevin Durant, saw his old head coach get fired after the Suns were eliminated by the Denver Nuggets, and he didn’t agree with that decision.

“He knows he’s a hell of a coach,” Bridges said about Williams on The Pivot Podcast. “He probably knows about the situation. Me personally, I say Monty ain’t the problem, but who the f*** am I? I just think Monty ain’t the problem, but he’s going to be great somewhere else. He’s going to get another chance and he’s going to be alright.”

Was Williams the problem in Phoenix? Probably not, but the fact of the matter is that not many coaches would have survived after their team was blown out in elimination games at home in back-to-back seasons. It was the Dallas Mavericks in Game 7 last year and of course, the Nuggets in Game 6 this time around. If that Game 6 loss wasn’t as bad as it was, Williams might still have the job, but someone had to pay the price, and it’s usually the coach.

Mikal Bridges Has Excelled Since Being Traded From The Suns

When Bridges was with the Suns, he was viewed as a very good player, who excelled on defense while also contributing well on offense. Since the trade, though, he has shown he can be a force on the offensive end and is looking like a star in the making for Brooklyn.

He averaged 26.1 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 2.7 APG, 1.0 SPG, and 0.8 BPG for the Nets to help them get to the playoffs. There was a lot of talk about how Brooklyn wasn’t even able to get an All-Star in return for Durant, but Bridges has put that to bed. He is generating a lot of interest around the league now, but the Nets aren’t interested in trading him.
