  • The Boston Celtics traded for Kristaps Porzingis this summer to add size
  • Brad Stevens noted that Porzingis can play with any member of their current frontcourt
  • The team couldn’t necessarily go big last season since their best players were guards

The Boston Celtics are a team that made a big splash this season, acquiring big man Kristaps Porzingis in a trade that sent Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies. Though this move clearly adds talent to the team, some fans have been unhappy about the team trading away Smart, who was viewed as the heart and soul of the team.

With that being said, the Boston Celtics had a good reason for getting Kristaps Porzingis. During a recent appearance on Jones And Mego, Brad Stevens explained that the team got him because the team wanted to add size, and noted that a regular center would have been tough to play with Robert Williams.

“The part that was very obvious was he’s 7-foot-3. He can play the 5 and the 4 and he can play with any of our 5’s and 4’s which I think is important. If you bring in someone who is just a center, it’s hard to play them and Rob together. But if you bring in someone with the skills that Kristaps has, that has the skillset that Al has, you can mix and match a little bit. You can stay bigger longer. That’s something we couldn’t do as much last year with our smaller groups because a lot of our best players were guards.” (10:30)

There is no doubt that Kristaps Porzingis will be a good fit with the Boston Celtics. He will give them more floor spacing and size and a consistent No. 3 scorer behind Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. One concern with Porzingis is his health, as he has only played more than 60 games once in the last four seasons (2022-23, 65 games).

This past season, Kristaps Porzingis averaged 23.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game while shooting 38.5% from 3PT range. Hopefully, we see him have a healthy and productive season with the Celtics next year.

Kristaps Porzingis Is Ready To Win With The Celtics

Throughout his career, Kristaps Porzingis has only been to the playoffs twice, and he has not made it past the first round. At this point, it seems as though the big man is ready to win at a high level. In fact, Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck previously said that Kristaps Porzingis is ready to embrace his role and win.

Being on a talented team like the Boston Celtics, Kristaps Porzingis will have to sacrifice. However, that sacrifice could result in a championship, and it seems as though that is a price Porzingis is willing to pay.
