Before Nikola Jokic came around, Carmelo Anthony was easily the greatest player in modern history for the Denver Nuggets.

After being drafted third overall in 2003, Melo led the Nuggets to the playoffs in all seven of his full seasons with the franchise but his time with them did not end on a good note. Relations between both parties still aren’t particularly great, but with his former team finally winning a title, Anthony took to Twitter to congratulate them.

“Champs! Congrats @nuggets.”

Melo’s trade request back in 2010 isn’t something that has quite been put to the side just yet, but it is important to not forget the good times. In 564 regular season games for the Nuggets, Anthony averaged 24.8 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 3.1 APG, 1.1 SPG, and 0.5 BPG.

He led them to the Western Conference Finals in 2009, where it took some incredible displays from Kobe Bryant, who averaged 34.0 PPG in that series, to eliminate them in six games. Had they gotten past the Los Angeles Lakers and then beat the Orlando Magic in the 2009 NBA Finals, Melo’s time with the team would be looked at quite differently.

Carmelo Anthony Thinks The Nuggets Should Retire His Jersey

Melo announced his retirement last month and the New York Knicks are thinking of retiring his jersey. There hasn’t been much said on whether the Nuggets are interested in doing it, although Anthony had stated a few years back that it is where his jersey should be retired.

The problem with that, of course, is that Jokic currently wears the No. 15 that Melo donned for the Nuggets. They could potentially retire the number twice and that isn’t actually unprecedented, as the Knicks retired No. 15 for Earl Monroe in 1986 and then for Dick McGuire in 1992.

Would the Nuggets go to those lengths for Melo? Well, time will tell.
