Nikola Jokic is just coming off the best postseason of his career. He led the Denver Nuggets to their first NBA Championship in franchise history.
Jokic has come a long way since he was drafted as the 41st overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. The Joker wasn’t close to his current fitness and evidently had some very concerning eating habits. One of them was apparently drinking three liters of Coca-Cola per day when he was in Serbia.
“The Nuggets discovered that the center with the sweet passes had a sweet tooth. Spoelstra might not have been able to find a flaw in Jokic’s game in the NBA Finals, but before Jokic came to the NBA, he had a weakness for Coca-Cola, downing three liters per day in Serbia,” wrote Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN.
“‘I think it’s just mental,’ said Jokic, who drank his last can on his first flight to Denver in 2015. ‘Like, don’t let Coke be stronger than you.'”
On top of that, Jokic was apparently unable to hold the plank position for more than 20 seconds when he first arrived in the USA.
“I died! I died,” Jokic told ESPN in 2019. “I was shaking. I said, ‘I can’t.’ I said, ‘Fuuuuuuuu …'”
But instead of giving up, Nikola Jokic improved his diet and ultimately his game to the extent that he became the best player in the NBA.
“Replacing soda with protein drinks, Jokic’s vices these days are a lot healthier,” Ohm wrote further. “When he’s not spending time with his wife, Natalija; daughter, Ognjena; and his brothers, Jokic is indulging in his passion for horses and horse racing. Jokic has said during this postseason run that he spent some of the off-time he and the Nuggets had between each series watching his horses compete overseas.”
Nikola Jokic’s love for animals is well-known. So much so that the two-time NBA MVP was excited to buy a new horse regardless of whether the Nuggets won or lost the NBA Finals.
Jokic finished the 2022-23 NBA Finals with 30.2 PPG, 14.0 RPG, and 7.2 APG while shooting 58.3% from the field and 42.1% from downtown. The Joker was awarded the NBA Finals MVP for his elite performances against the Miami Heat.
Nikola Jokic’s Message To His Doubters After Winning The 2023 NBA Title
Nikola Jokic’s journey in the NBA is nothing short of a fairy tale. Since getting drafted in 2014, Jokic has continued to get better each season.
After winning the first ring of his career at 28 years old, Jokic delivered a perfect message for his doubters.
“They didn’t believe in the fat boy,” Jokic joked. “It seems like it worked out. Don’t bet against the fat boy!”
Jokic has the potential to go down as one of the best centers to ever play the game of basketball. For many, he has already reached that pedestal after winning this season’s NBA Championship.
