One of the most talked about teams this offseason has been the Houston Rockets. The franchise has made a big step towards climbing out of the bottom of the NBA, signing Fred VanVleet and Dillon Brooks on controversially large contracts.
Brooks’ future with the Memphis Grizzlies died over last season. Tim MacMahon shared that the Grizzlies just wanted an upgrade over Brooks even before all his playoff controversies hit the squad, primarily due to his erratic shot selection. Similarly, Brooks didn’t want to remain a relegated fourth or fifth option on the quad.
“The primary reason the Grizzlies were trying to replace Dillon Brooks for a full two years, repeatedly going after players that would have replaced him in the trade market, and he probably would have been sent out, was because of the shot selection issue. Dillon did not want to be a fourth or fifth offensive weapon.”
This situation seems to have worked out for all sides, as Brooks got a contract the Grizzlies were never going to give him while the team got to move on and shake up their roster. Brooks averaged a disappointing 14.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists on 39.6% shooting last season.
How Do The Grizzlies Upgrade Their Wings?
With Brooks leaving for nothing, there’s a clear hole on the wing in Memphis. It’s looking likely that Marcus Smart is played in that position after Ja Morant returns from his suspension. The Grizzlies also have young wing Ziaire Williams waiting, but his development still hasn’t warranted a starting spot.
The Grizzlies spent a few of their future assets to acquire Smart but still have the room to make a big trade. The team was aggressive in their failed pursuit of Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby last winter. They need to keep that aggression alive as the wing spot becomes the hardest for teams in the NBA to address due to the high value of the good players in that role.
