ESPN has put forth an apology for using old stock footage of the twin towers that were broadcast during the playoff game between the Miami Heat and the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.

“We mistakenly used an old stock image and we apologize,” said senior director, of communications at ESPN Ben Cafardo in an email to Awful Announcing.

The skirmish between the two teams was aired on ABC, and during a cutaway to a commercial during halftime, the Statue of Liberty was seen at the front, while the tops of the twin towers were briefly noticed as well, causing much furor.

It’s not a novelty to see stock footage, but when it comes to showcasing a landmark that could trigger emotions in people, perhaps networks could be a bit more attentive. Multiple viewers voiced their displeasure at the use of the footage.

Per USA Today, this incident wasn’t the first time that there was a broadcast blunder involving the World Trade Center. Fox Sports had issued an apology after superimposing the Yankees and the Red Sox logos over the memorial pools of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.

The Miami Heat Take A 1-0 Lead After Getting The Better Of The New York Knicks

On the game front, the Miami Heat extended their scintillating run by pipping the New York Knicks 108-101 in Game 1. The hosts, in the absence of Julius Randle, were reliant on Jalen Brunson (25 points) and RJ Barrett (26 points) but were outplayed by the Heat, who had Jimmy Butler (25 points) and Gabe Vincent (20 points) to show for.

But the Heat will be sweating over Butler’s injury after the forward rolled his ankle. He gutted through the pain to add 11 rebounds and 4 assists to his tall. Speaking to the media after the game, “Find a way to win. Be out there. Be a presence,” Butler said. “I didn’t do too much, except for air balling a three, but I’ll take the dub.”

Miami will closely monitor Butler’s condition, but given his grit, it’s almost certain that he will likely play on a minutes restriction if it comes to it. That said, this series is far from over.
