Ja Morant was finally given his punishment for his gun incident, as NBA commissioner Adam Silver announced that Ja would serve a 25-game suspension to start the 2023-24 NBA season. This is the second incident from Morant, with the first one occurring in March when he pulled out a gun at a strip club.
Former NBA player Gilbert Arenas was asked by VladTV about Ja’s gun incident, to which Arenas could not stop laughing. Addressing the first incident at the strip club, Arenas was just confused as to why Ja felt the need to pull his gun out on Instagram Live.
“In the strip club? For what? You’re in the middle of getting a lap dance, enjoying life, probably drinking… money flying everywhere, and you’re on social media. What makes you think to grab the gun to show it? Still to this day, who the f*ck are you shooting?… I’m trying to figure out what’s the point. You’re in the middle of a fun f*cking activity, you got your f*cking shirt off, you’re sweating, there’s f*cking money everywhere, what makes you just (gestures a gun)? The f*cking weirdest flex bro.”
(From 3:28 mark)
Arenas seemingly didn’t question Ja’s other gun incident where he allegedly threatened a 17-year-old with a gun, but was perplexed by the strip club incident. Arenas himself has a history of gun incidents, including being suspended for almost a year when he was caught in possession of a gun in the Wizards’ locker room.
Ja Morant Has To Redeem Himself This Season
Ja Morant will have a lot of work to prove his critics wrong going forward. The fact that this is the second time Morant is having to be reprimanded for such an incident has given critics plenty of ammunition to question his sincerity. Morant issued an apology, but analysts such as Stephen A. Smith have questioned the sincerity.
Morant has a lot to lose, as Brian Windhorst revealed that he could stand to lose $50 million due to these incidents. Nike has vowed to stand behind Ja as he seeks help and tries to improve himself and his image going forward.
The Grizzlies will definitely miss Morant. There is no doubt that he is their star player, as he averaged 26.2 points, 8.1 assists, and 5.9 rebounds last season. The Grizzlies have shown that they can play well without him, but they need to overdeliver while they wait for Morant to make his return.
