The Toronto Raptors drafted versatile offensive talent Gradey Dick with the 13th pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, a very exciting addition to a young Raptors’ core.

Gradey is going to be popular around the league for his name but going to Toronto also means he now has a direct line with hip-hop superstar and Raptors superfan Drake. They’ve already interacted on Instagram, and the Raptors draftee revealed what Drake DMd him for their first conversation.

“Yes, a little bit. You’ve seen some of the little posts he’s had on his stories and like that. He first DMd me and said ‘Welcome home’. I said, ‘Thank you’. You know, get that going.”

Gradey is coming off an incredibly successful season with the Kansas Jayhawks, where he averaged 14.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.4 steals per game. The 6’8″ forward is going to bring more offense to the Raptors, having proven his ability to be a three-level scorer at the NCAA level.

The Raptors Need To Pick A Direction

The Toronto Raptors have spent the seasons since their championship triumph in 2019 as one of the middling teams in the East. They haven’t been willing to give up on Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby, with Fred VanVleet leaving the team as a free agent this summer. They brought veteran guard Dennis Schroder in as a replacement, showing that the team will continue to push for the playoffs instead of bottoming out.

OG Anunoby is a free agent next season and has been floated around in trade rumors, though the team has been pushing to keep him

Siakam will turn 30 years old by the end of next season and has a small window of competitive play left. The Raptors need to cash in on their greatest homegrown success story while he still has value. Teams have been interested in trading for Siakam, it’s just a question of when the Raptors are willing to part with him.
