Ja Morant might have caused major damage to his bright young career with his latest gun controversy.

Morant is taking an indefinite amount of time away from the team and getting counseling over his issues, but this might have massive financial ramifications for the young star.

If Ja fails to make an All-NBA team this season, he won’t be eligible for the rookie supermax that nets him $233 million over 5 seasons. He’ll be reduced to the regular rookie max that pays out $194 million over the same contract length.

In the grand scheme of things, the money Morant may lose out on by not being All-NBA won’t matter. If he rushes back without finding the peace of mind he needs, he may put himself in a position to squander everything away. Second chances are very rare in the eyes of the public, and everyone’s been willing to give Ja a second chance.

Can The Grizzlies Compete Without Ja Morant?

The Memphis Grizzlies just picked up their second consecutive win over the Dallas Mavericks to send the Texas-based franchise plummeting to an under .500 record. Though Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving were out with injuries, it was impressive to see the Grizzlies’ core continue to pick up such strong wins.

Morant is averaging 27.1 points, 8.2 assists, and 6.0 rebounds this season. The ceiling of the Grizzlies’ playoff success is dependent on Morant’s performance, but the depth of the team is perfectly capable of helping the team see out the rest of the season and still compete to be the No. 2 seed in the East.

The competitive nature of this Memphis team should be credited. But if Morant isn’t in the right headspace to lead them in the postseason, the team may be better off looking at the future and hoping they can compete then.
