The Houston Rockets were the biggest spenders in free agency, as they used up their cap space to add veteran talent to the team by signing Dillon Brooks and Fred VanVleet.

VanVleet was paid handsomely to leave the Raptors for Houston and has already been seen working out with teammate Jalen Green. Green shared his excitement about playing with VanVleet in a recent interview, calling FVV a winning point guard.

“That’s super dope for the team, not just for me but for the whole team, to have a veteran point guard, a winning point guard, that we can learn from and set the tone for us.”

VanVleet is a former champion and All-Star but is coming off a tough season. He averaged 19.3 points, 7.2 assists, and 4.1 rebounds last season but shot an inefficient 39.3% for the season. His scoring load won’t be as heavy in Houston as he’s surrounded by talented guards, so hopefully, his playmaking allows players like Green and Jabari Smith Jr. to unlock new facets of their game.

The Rockets Hoping To Take A Step Forward

The Houston Rockets have been lottery fodder for the last three seasons and will finally take a step back toward relevance this season. The salaries they paid to FVV and Brooks may be inflated, but the short-term nature of the deals gives the franchise room to pivot in a season or two if needed.

Brooks is an All-Defensive Team member, while FVV averaged 1.8 steals last season. Their additions are going to help the Rockets play winning basketball, as both players were integral to the playoff cultures they left behind. It’ll be a fascinating season in H-Town, as they try not to get drowned out in Texas by the superstar talent present in Dallas and San Antonio.
